Happy - the movie...

I’m really into the idea of serendipity at the moment – it was celebrated at Gathering’11 and I have just generally been feeling it in my life recently. And the more I embrace it, and follow that feeling, the more I am discovering amazing people and ideas!

On Monday night I was catching up on blogs and I read Sarah Wilons’ Some happiness & it’s causes reflections post. In the final paragraph Sarah mentions a new film – Happy by Roko Belic:

It touches on this idea that happiness is 50% determined by genes, 10% is determined by life circumstances (income, marital status etc) and 40% is determined by “other stuff”. What other stuff? Well, what we choose to make of our lives. This is entirely liberating. This stuff is free things: our passions, the flow from surfing, connecting with family and friends etc.

And I thought – that sounds like something I would enjoy! Checked out whether it was in Sydney and wouldn’t you know it Govinda’s had just added another screening for the next evening. Mum and I already had plans to head to the movies on Tuesday night, so we just swapped the film and off we went!

I’m so glad we changed our plans and went – the film is excellent and we got to enjoy a Q & A with Roko afterwards.

The movie tells us on a journey to discover what really makes us happy. It weaves together the “science” of happiness and stories from people all around the world.

It will take you through a range of emotions – I laughed and cried. But I promise you will leave the cinema happy you saw it!

For me what really resonated was the role that having strong relationships and community in your life plays finding personal happiness. And I also loved Roko’s comment that:

My happiness in not about me it is about we

Head over to the Happy website for sneak peak at the movie and Australian screening times. And if its not showing near you – print off a screening request and take it in to your local cinema!
